Remembering Sharon F. Herron: South Dakota Rancher, Horse Trainer, and Community Leader

Sharon F. Herron, born November 2, 1941, in Sturgis, South Dakota, was a lifelong rancher and horse enthusiast deeply rooted in country life. She studied art at Black Hills State University and was actively involved in the South Dakota Stock Growers Association, earning titles such as Miss Central Meade County and Miss SD Stock Growers. Sharon married twice, first to James R. Ferguson with whom she had two children, and later to Wes Herron, with whom she ranched until his passing in 2005. Known for her humor, extensive knowledge of horses, and self-taught veterinary skills, she was a respected horse trainer and a founding member of the South Dakota Ranch Quarter Horse Breeders Association.

Sharon passed away on September 6, 2025, at the age of 83. Her legacy includes her contributions to the local 4-H club, her award-winning horses, and her lifelong dedication to ranching and animal care. Funeral services were held in Union Center, South Dakota, with burial in Sturgis. She is remembered fondly by family and friends for her spirit, expertise, and love of the rural lifestyle.
