DV Stenkjers Nadonna, the Donnerschlag mare who marked Gareth Hughes’ championship debut, has died aged 28. Nadonna played a pivotal role in revitalizing British dressage post-London Olympics, helping secure team bronze at the 2013 European Championships and team silver at the 2014 World Equestrian Games. Despite her small stature, she was known for her powerful presence, expressive collection, and strong character, traits that made her a formidable competitor and beloved partner. Initially ridden by Roland Tong and Pippa Fisher, Nadonna eventually found her stride with Hughes, who began riding her when she lacked a regular rider, leading to unexpected championship success.
Throughout her career, Nadonna remained closely connected to owner Jane Brewin, who regularly rode her except in the lead-up to major competitions. Their partnership exceeded all expectations, with Nadonna retiring in 2015 as a two-time championship medallist. After retirement, she lived out her days as a cherished herd matriarch at Headmore Stud. Nadonna’s legacy endures as a defining chapter in British dressage history, remembered for her talent, temperament, and the thrilling performances she delivered alongside Hughes on the international stage.
