Dr. Donald Woodrow “Woody” Smith, a dedicated veterinarian from Colorado, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2025, after a brave battle with cancer. Born in 1946 and raised on a ranch in Ramah, Colo., Woody was inspired by the courage of his father and uncle, both World War II veterans. Despite childhood asthma and allergies, he pursued his dream of veterinary medicine, earning his doctorate in 1970 and serving the Elbert County community for over 55 years. Woody was known for his mixed veterinary practice, passion for horses and cattle, and his commitment to helping ranchers and animal owners one client at a time.
Beyond his veterinary career, Woody was deeply involved in his community as a 4-H leader, sports coach, and fair board co-chairman, contributing to local improvements and youth development. He loved sports, horses, and the outdoors, maintaining his ranch and caring for animals until the fall of 2025. Woody’s legacy continues through his family, community contributions, and the donation of his body to science. A life celebration will be held in January 2026, with donations encouraged to the Dr. Woody Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund.
