Reining Chaos, a multi-county 4-H drill team from Crow Wing and Cass counties, will send nine of its 12 members to compete at the Minnesota State 4-H Drill Competition on September 14 in Sauk Centre. The competition, split over two weekends due to renovations at the state fairgrounds, features multiple divisions including small freestyle and limited freestyle. Reining Chaos aims to defend its small freestyle state champion title from last year, with a strong team led by co-captains Charlotte Satterfield and Peyton Mongan. The limited freestyle team, which performs a 2-4 minute routine with required maneuvers in a challenging narrow arena, will also compete.
The drill team event is a choreographed horseback “dance” judged on horsemanship, alignment, precision, choreography, execution, and presentation. Reining Chaos also supports an exhibition team that includes riders of all ages, fostering skill development through collaboration between experienced and younger riders. The team recently showcased their routines at the Crow Wing County Fair. For those interested in joining 4-H or drill team, information is available through the Minnesota 4-H program and local county extension offices.
