REDWINGS Horse Sanctuary has announced the immediate closure of its Redwings Mountains centre in Forfar, Angus, and Redwings Oxhill in Warwickshire, resulting in 33 staff redundancies. The closures follow a staff consultation and are part of a financial review aimed at reducing operating costs amid rising expenses and economic challenges. The charity’s remaining visitor centres in Norfolk and Essex will continue to operate as usual, and all resident horses and donkeys from the closed centres will be relocated to Norfolk sites.
Chief Executive Lynn Cutress emphasized that the closures do not affect Redwings’ rescue operations, as neither centre took in rescue cases directly. The decision was driven by the need to secure the long-term future of over 1,000 rescued equines in their care. Despite the difficult changes, Redwings continues to rely on public support and expressed gratitude for the donations and messages received during this challenging period. The charity, one of the UK’s largest equine welfare organizations, has been managing financial pressures for several years and sought external advice before making this decision.
