Redwings, a UK equine welfare charity, has announced a consultation on the potential closure of two of its centres—Redwings Mountains in Forfar, Angus, and Redwings Oxhill in Warwickshire—to reduce operating costs and safeguard the future care of its horses. The proposals, affecting 39 jobs, could result in relocating over 100 horses and donkeys to the charity’s Norfolk sites. Both centres are temporarily closed to visitors during the consultation, which is expected to last at least a month.
Chief Executive Lynn Cuttress emphasized that rising costs have made it unsustainable to continue operating at current levels, with the charity having spent financial reserves for four years to balance its budget. The closures are part of necessary measures to ensure donations are used effectively and to maintain the welfare of the more than 1,000 equines in Redwings’ care. Cuttress described the decision as painful but essential to secure the charity’s long-term mission of providing lifelong care and rehabilitation for neglected horses.
