The Redwings charity has announced the closure of its visitor centre in Warwickshire, affecting a total of 33 staff members who have been offered support and assistance in finding alternative employment. Despite these closures, the charity emphasized that its ability to rescue horses nationwide remains unchanged, as these centres did not take in rescue cases directly. The decision to close the centres aims to reduce significant operating costs, ensuring the long-term sustainability of care for over 1,000 rescued horses, ponies, and donkeys.
Chief executive Lynn Cutress highlighted that rising costs have severely impacted charities like Redwings across the UK, forcing the use of financial reserves over the past four years, which is unsustainable. After nearly two years of financial review and external advice, the Board of Trustees concluded that these difficult changes were necessary given the challenging economic climate. Meanwhile, the Norfolk and Essex visitor centres will continue operating normally, with animals from the closing Forfar and Warwickshire centres being rehomed in Norfolk.
