On Kentucky Derby day, total wagering reached a record $349 million, surpassing last year’s $320.5 million. The all-sources handle for the Derby race itself also set a new high at $234.4 million, exceeding the previous record of $210.7 million. Overall, Derby week saw a total handle of $473.9 million, up from last year’s $446.6 million.
TwinSpires, the official betting partner, reported a record $108 million in wagering for the Derby Day program, compared to $92.1 million last year. Specifically, TwinSpires handled $73 million for the Derby race, breaking its previous record of $60.9 million.
Despite these record figures, the company anticipates that adjusted earnings for Derby week will be among the top two results in its history, though slightly lower than last year by $2 million to $4 million. CEO Bill Carstanjen expressed satisfaction with the event’s performance and highlighted plans for future growth following the milestone of the 150th Derby last year.
