The recent Stortford Lodge ewe fair marked a strong start to the year for New Zealand sheep farmers, with record-breaking prices reflecting robust demand for breeding ewes. Romney ewes dominated the market across all age groups, with 2-tooth ewes reaching a new national record price of $382, surpassing previous highs from 2020. The fair saw intense competition fueled by positive market prospects, timely rain, and high cattle prices, with 13,200 breeding ewes offered from vendors across the region.
The 2-tooth ewes, particularly purpose-bred Romney lines, set the tone with multiple lines exceeding $300 per head, while 4-tooth and older ewes also attracted strong bids, with prices for 5-year Romney ewes rising significantly compared to last year. Large consignments, including those from farms adjusting policies or losing leases, drew keen interest from buyers, highlighting confidence in the ewe and lamb markets and underscoring the vital role of breeding ewes in sustaining New Zealand’s sheep industry.
