Rebecca Smith MP Calls for Improved Horse and Rider Safety on South West Devon Roads

Rebecca Smith, MP for South West Devon, raised concerns in Parliament about the safety of horse riders on roads in her constituency, emphasizing the risks posed by high-speed traffic on routes frequently used by equestrians, including local riding schools and Dartmoor ponies. During a Westminster Hall debate, she called for greater driver awareness and more appropriate speed limits, highlighting the impact of current speed regulations on the B3213 road. The Roads Minister responded by acknowledging the need for improved safety measures and confirmed that updated government guidance on speed limits for local authorities is underway.

Following the debate, Smith welcomed the Minister’s recognition but stressed that awareness campaigns must lead to tangible changes to protect riders and horses effectively. She committed to continuing her efforts with constituents, riding schools, and equestrian groups to ensure road safety policies better reflect the needs of rural communities and equestrians, advocating for practical improvements on the ground.
