Randy Winick, Trainer of 1993 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Winner Brocco, Dies at 76

Randy Winick, a prominent horse trainer known for conditioning the 1993 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Brocco, passed away on February 15 at the age of 76. Over his career from 1974 to 2005, Winick trained numerous stakes winners, including grade 1 champions Dontstop Themusic, Country Queen, Mitterand, and Spence Bay. His most successful year was 1985, highlighted by Dontstop Themusic’s victories in major races like the Vanity Handicap and Spinster Stakes, and overall career earnings exceeding $10 million from 340 wins in 2,346 starts.

Brocco, Winick’s top-earning horse with over $1 million in winnings, also won the 1994 Santa Anita Derby and placed fourth in the 1984 Kentucky Derby. After retiring from training, Winick served as a steward for the California Horse Racing Board. He is survived by his daughter Tierney Rae Winick and sister Stacey Winick, with private services planned. The family has requested donations to Accent Care Hospice in his memory.
