Raising Autism Awareness Through Horseback Rides: Brawley Police Department and U.S. Border Patrol Join Forces

The Brawley Police Department and the U.S. Border Patrol’s El Centro sector organized an autism awareness horseback ride in Brawley, starting at the police department and ending at Main St. and the Plaza. Law enforcement on horseback followed behind police cars, stopping to greet autistic kids and their families along the route. The event aimed to raise awareness and support for organizations like Autism Support of Imperial County (ASIC) that help autistic kids and their families.

Brawley Police Chief Jimmy Duran explained that the event was organized to bring awareness for Autism Awareness Month and to help people understand the challenges faced by families with autistic children. Assemblymember Jeff Gonzalez participated in the horseback ride to support his son, who has developmental disabilities, and the broader special needs community. About 30 kids with autism attended the event, along with family members, and were treated to ice cream by law enforcement at Fosters Freeze.

Upcoming events planned by ASIC to continue raising awareness about autism include an Autism Awareness baseball game hosted by the Holtville Vikings, an autism fair and 5k run at Eager Park in Imperial, and an autism awareness fair at Radamacher Park in Calipatria. The organization is dedicated to supporting autistic children and their families, with more information available on their website.
