Rainbow Riders Therapeutic Riding Program in St. John’s Seeks More Volunteers Amid Rapid Growth

The Rainbow Riders therapeutic horse riding program in St. John’s has experienced significant growth over the past six years, expanding from about 30 participants to around 170 weekly. Program director Erin O’Rielly emphasizes the crucial role of over 200 volunteers who assist with programming and horse care, noting that more volunteers aged 14 and older are needed to meet increasing demand. While horse experience is helpful, it is not mandatory for volunteer roles such as leading or side walking.

O’Rielly highlights the transformative impact the program has on participants, including building confidence and encouraging communication, especially for those with disabilities. Longtime volunteer Lisa Greenland Knopp shares the joy of witnessing participants blossom and form meaningful connections through their interactions with horses and fellow volunteers. The program continues to expand, offering valuable therapeutic benefits and community engagement.
