The Rainbow Riders therapeutic horse riding program in St. John’s has experienced significant growth over the past six years, expanding from about 30 participants to around 170 weekly. Program director Erin O’Rielly emphasizes the crucial role of over 200 volunteers who assist with programming and horse care, and she highlights the need for more volunteers aged 14 and older to meet increasing demand. While horse experience is helpful, it is not mandatory for volunteer roles such as leading or side walking.
O’Rielly and long-time volunteer Lisa Greenland Knopp both speak to the profound impact the program has on participants, many of whom gain confidence, develop new skills, and form meaningful connections with horses and volunteers. The program fosters special moments, including non-verbal riders beginning to speak while on horseback, illustrating the unique therapeutic benefits of the riding experience. Volunteers also find camaraderie and joy in supporting the riders’ growth and transformation.
