The Great Northern Gallop 2025, a 100-km charity race in New Zealand, brought together miniature horse enthusiasts to promote animal welfare. Organized by the Born to Run Adventure Racing Charitable Trust, the event spans four days and features participants leading miniature horses across diverse terrains, including forests, farmland, and beaches. The race not only raises funds but also highlights the often-overlooked plight of miniature horses, many of whom face neglect and health issues.
Participants can either bring their own miniature horses or rent from the organization’s herd, which includes many rescue animals. The event emphasizes animal welfare, with mandatory vet checks to ensure the horses’ well-being. Only horses aged 3-20 and in good health are allowed to participate, while stallions, pregnant mares, and foals are excluded.
The 2025 race took place from April 17-21, attracting a mix of serious runners and families seeking a leisurely experience. Registration fees cover catering and accommodation, making it a comprehensive event that fosters community engagement while advocating for the welfare of miniature horses.
