Queensland Unveils $200 Million Racing Future Fund with Infrastructure Upgrades and Animal Welfare Measures

The Queensland government has unveiled the “Next Lap” plan for the racing industry, backed by a $200 million infrastructure fund aimed at upgrading facilities statewide, including a $75 million replacement of the Eagle Farm spectator stand and upgrades in Toowoomba, Bundaberg, and Rockhampton. Albion Park in Brisbane will be developed as the new Racing Queensland headquarters, supporting thoroughbred, harness, and greyhound racing. The plan accepts most recommendations from the extensive McGrath review, focusing on improved governance and animal welfare measures such as a digital passport system for greyhounds and a new retirement program, while maintaining the current 20% point-of-consumption tax to provide business certainty.

Despite these reforms, the government rejected five financial recommendations, including lowering the wagering tax rate, citing the need for stability. Animal welfare advocates remain critical, particularly regarding greyhound racing, which faces calls for a ban following recent dog deaths and growing public opposition. The Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds condemned the review as biased and ineffective, arguing that greyhound racing cannot be made safe and should be phased out, contrasting with the government’s commitment to sustain and develop the industry.
