Purnima Karmakar is leading the creation of Dhubri’s first animal shelter under the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), marking a pivotal advancement in the district’s animal welfare efforts. With over 22 years of experience and having personally rescued more than 30 animals, Karmakar has been a dedicated advocate for stray and abandoned animals, often funding care from her own resources. Since becoming the district SPCA president in 2022, she has emphasized the urgent need for a properly equipped shelter to replace the inadequate temporary facilities currently in use.

Inspired and supported by her two daughters, Karmakar views the shelter as a shared family mission to provide systematic care for vulnerable animals. She hopes the new facility will attract government support, ensuring that injured and abandoned animals in Dhubri receive the comprehensive treatment and protection they have long lacked. This initiative represents a significant step forward in institutionalizing animal welfare in the region.
