Punjab to Host Grand Ghoda Mandi Horse Fair Showcasing Elite Breeds and Livestock Welfare

The Punjab government is organizing the traditional ‘Ghoda Mandi’ horse fair next week at Sri Muktsar Sahib during the Maghi Mela to preserve local culture and boost the livestock economy. The event will showcase elite horse breeds like Marwari and Nukra, along with rare cattle species, attracting breeders, traders, and animal enthusiasts from across the region. Held on a 70-acre site, the fair aims to celebrate Punjab’s rural heritage and highlight best practices in animal husbandry.

To ensure the welfare and safety of the livestock, the government has set up a dedicated veterinary dispensary and deployed a 40-member team led by the Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry to provide round-the-clock care and disease surveillance. Authorities have urged farmers to bring only healthy animals and to seek veterinary advice if any signs of illness appear before attending the fair, emphasizing the importance of livestock health for the rural economy.
