Protecting Florida’s Thoroughbred Industry: A Call to Action

Florida’s rural communities, including the thoroughbred horse industry, have long been a vital part of the state’s economy, supporting thousands of jobs and contributing billions to the economy. However, a new proposal before the Legislature could threaten this legacy by allowing thoroughbred pari-mutuel permit holders to decouple from live racing and operate as standalone cardrooms and slot machine casinos.

Florida has a strong reputation in thoroughbred racing, producing champions at every level and accounting for a significant portion of national race entries, wins, and purse earnings. The state is a leader in the global sale of two-year-old thoroughbreds, with up to 75% of all juvenile thoroughbreds in the U.S. receiving training in Florida.

The thoroughbred industry not only supports jobs and economic growth but also drives tourism and economic development in the state. Lawmakers are urged to protect this generational industry and ensure that Florida remains a dominant force in thoroughbred racing, rather than risking losing its competitive edge to rival states.
