Project R.I.D.E, a nonprofit therapeutic riding facility in Elk Grove, California, has been providing equine therapy since 1979 to individuals of all ages with physical, emotional, and intellectual disabilities across the greater Sacramento area. The program offers recreational horseback riding and uses specially trained horses that can sense and respond to riders’ emotions, fostering a unique connection that promotes happiness, independence, and control for participants. For those unable to ride, Project R.I.D.E also features an interactive simulated horse named Buster Brady. The organization’s instructors are accredited through PATH International, ensuring professional therapeutic horsemanship.
Danny Ford, director of operations and a parent of a rider with Down syndrome, emphasizes the transformative impact the program has on participants, describing it as “the happiest place on Earth.” The facility relies on donations and volunteers to sustain its services and is currently preparing for its annual steak dinner fundraiser. Project R.I.D.E continues to be a vital resource, bringing joy and therapeutic benefits to individuals with special needs in the community.
