Jennifer Reggio, a former horse trainer and racer who began professional camel riding at age 40, has quickly made a name for herself in the sport after just two months of training. Originally from Dubai, where she returned to raise her son, Reggio was drawn to women’s camel racing in 2023 and secured fourth place in her first 2,000-meter race. She highlights the skill, balance, and bravery required to ride camels, which can run at speeds comparable to horses but are less predictable, often deciding mid-race to change direction. Reggio has competed internationally, including in France and Saudi Arabia, and emphasizes the intelligence and sensitivity of camels, countering misconceptions about the animals and the sport.
Passionate about the cultural significance of camel racing in the Middle East, Reggio is now campaigning to have the sport included in the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. She acknowledges the sport’s challenges and thrills, encouraging others to pursue new passions regardless of age. Reggio’s advocacy aims to raise awareness and respect for camel racing, promoting it as a legitimate and exciting athletic pursuit with deep historical roots.
