Pregnant Mare Rescue, a nonprofit sanctuary in Corralitos founded in 2006 by Lynn Hummer, provides a safe haven for unwanted horses, particularly expectant mares and those no longer able to work or breed. Over its nearly 20-year history, the sanctuary has cared for more than 860 horses, offering them lifelong refuge and serving the community by facilitating therapeutic interactions between people and horses. The farm also supports volunteers, including high school students fulfilling community service hours, and offers a peaceful environment for meditation and healing.
Despite its vital role, Pregnant Mare Rescue faces financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic, severe weather events, and Hummer’s health challenges, including two battles with cancer. To keep the sanctuary open and allow Hummer to retire, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched with a $25,000 goal. Closure would risk horses being sent to auctions and slaughterhouses, a fate the sanctuary strives to prevent. The community is encouraged to support the rescue through donations and volunteer efforts to ensure its continued operation.
