Police and Charities Launch Horse Road Safety Films to Prevent Collisions on Rural Roads

Devon & Cornwall Police, the British Horse Society, and The Mare and Foal Sanctuary have collaborated to produce a series of short films aimed at preventing collisions and near-misses involving horses on rural roads. These videos, filmed at The Mare and Foal Sanctuary in North Devon, provide clear guidance for both drivers and riders on road etiquette, safe passing distances, hand signals, visibility, and how to report incidents. PC Lucy Wyatt emphasized the importance of drivers slowing down to no more than 10 mph and maintaining at least two meters of space when passing horses to ensure safety for all road users.

The initiative responds to growing national concern highlighted in a 2026 Parliamentary debate, where MPs called for stricter road safety measures after over 3,000 horse-related road incidents in 2024, including 58 horse fatalities. Welfare experts stress the importance of riders regularly updating their road safety knowledge and encourage reporting dangerous encounters via the Horse i app or police Operation Snap. The campaign aims to raise awareness, promote courteous behavior, and ultimately reduce injuries and fatalities involving horses on roads.
