Pimlico Race Course is set for a significant transformation, with plans to redevelop its 117 acres into a modern hub for Maryland horse racing. The Maryland Thoroughbred Racetrack Operating Authority has outlined a $500 million plan that includes the construction of 40 new buildings, including revamped stakes barns designed for public use. The existing grandstand and clubhouse will be demolished, making way for a smaller yet more elegant clubhouse inspired by historical designs, featuring year-round gathering spaces.
The redevelopment aims to enhance the facility’s capacity from 15 to over 100 racing days annually, while preserving historical elements of the track. Plans to rotate the track have been scrapped to save costs, ensuring the Preakness Stakes returns to Pimlico by 2027. The infield will remain open for various events, including concerts and festivals, promoting flexibility in usage.
Additionally, a new training facility will be established at the recently acquired Shamrock Farms, providing ample space for 800 horses and rental options for horse owners. As demolition is set to begin in late June, the project marks a pivotal moment in revitalizing Pimlico and reaffirming its status in the horse racing community.
