Philadelphia Nonprofit Empowers Kids Through Horse Riding and Life Lessons

The Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club in Philadelphia is a nonprofit organization that teaches children how to ride and care for horses, empowering them to overcome fears and take control of their lives. Founded in 2004 by Ellis Ferrell Jr., who shared his passion for horses with neighborhood kids, the club offers free riding opportunities and has positively impacted many youth, some of whom have gone on to become jockeys, trainers, police officers, and even an NFL player. For members like 10-year-old Andre Baker and Aziyah Blackwell, the club provides not only riding skills but also therapeutic benefits and life lessons.

Despite raising significant funds annually, the club faces uncertainty as the neighborhood changes, prompting Ellis Ferrell to begin passing leadership to his son, Darrin, who is committed to continuing the mission. The club emphasizes teaching life skills alongside horsemanship, aiming to sustain its tradition and support future generations in the community.
