The 2026 Pennsylvania State Farm Show successfully held its equine events with enhanced biosecurity measures following the nationwide Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) outbreak in November 2025. Despite the cancellation of the Junior Youth rodeo due to concerns over large horse gatherings, the show featured the PRCA finals rodeo and new events from the National Reined Cow Horse Association, attracting horses from multiple states and Canada. Strict protocols included twice-daily temperature logs before arrival, on-site quarantines, and thorough stall disinfection, which helped prevent further spread of the disease. The outbreak, originating from a Texas rodeo, caused some horse fatalities but was contained through responsible management and cooperation among horse owners.
Attendance at the farm show reached record levels with over 28,000 visitors, and the Pennsylvania Equine Council (PEC) remained actively engaged with state agriculture officials to monitor the situation. While some horses, particularly breeding mares, were kept home as a precaution, the event was deemed a success. Looking ahead, the PEC encourages continued vigilance against EHM and other equine diseases like shipping fever and strangles, emphasizing smart management practices such as isolation stalls to mitigate risks. The quarantine order is set to expire by February 28, allowing a hopeful return to normal equine activities in Pennsylvania.
