Pennsylvania Hosts Inaugural Yearling Show to Showcase Thoroughbred Breeding

The Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association (PHBA) is hosting the Commonwealth’s first-ever Pennsylvania Yearling Show on June 21 at the Brandywine Polo Club in New Garden, PA. This event aims to showcase Pennsylvania-bred thoroughbreds, with yearlings judged on conformation and racing suitability across four classes, and awards given for grooming and overall health. The show encourages breeders to spend more time preparing their horses, benefiting the yearlings both mentally and physically, and offers more than $5,000 in prizes.

Breeder Lizzie Merryman of Buffalo Run Ranch in Chester County expressed enthusiasm for the new show, highlighting its importance in promoting local breeding and horse development. Merryman, who has bred successful racehorses like Caravel and Witty, emphasized the challenges and joys of raising yearlings. The free, family-friendly event will also feature a “Starlight Polo” match in the evening, inviting the public to engage with Pennsylvania’s thoroughbred community.
