Pamela Howell Beres, a Palm Beach County woman, has been charged with animal cruelty after an investigation revealed that several of her horses were severely underweight, resulting in the death of one horse. Following a year-long inquiry initiated in February 2024, authorities discovered six horses and a pony in poor condition at her property, with no access to adequate food or water. A veterinarian’s report indicated that the horses were emaciated, and one horse had to be euthanized due to its dire state.
After the horses were seized, they received proper care and nutrition, leading to significant improvements in their health within three months. The horses were later transferred to Grune Heidi Farm Rescue, where efforts were made to reunite them with their pedigrees. The rescue’s president, Erika Gilbert, noted that Beres had previously been well-known in the equine community but had become blinded by the potential monetary value of the horses, neglecting their basic needs.
The rescued animals, including a pony named Freya, have since found new homes. Freya has become a therapy pony, participating in a mentorship program for children in foster care. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by animal rescues, which are overwhelmed by cases of neglect and overbreeding, emphasizing the need for community support and responsible pet ownership.
