Own a Piece of Canadian History: RCMP Hanoverian Horses and Breeding Auction Opens

The RCMP’s renowned horse breeding program, which produces the black Hanoverians used in the iconic Musical Ride, is offering 16 horses and over 70 doses of breeding semen for auction through the Government of Canada’s online platform, GCSurplus. While not all foals meet the strict criteria to perform in the Musical Ride, these horses are still prized for their exceptional temperament, athleticism, and lineage, making them suitable for various equestrian disciplines. The auction includes horses like Vimy, a confident filly, and Legal, an 11-year-old mare with excellent jumping ability but no longer fit for the Musical Ride’s physical demands.

The Musical Ride, a celebrated Canadian tradition dating back to 1901, features mounted officers performing intricate cavalry drills and has been based in Ottawa since 1960. The RCMP’s breeding program, running since 1939, ensures horses have the calm disposition, size, and solid black coat required for this performance. Proceeds from the auction support the breeding program, allowing buyers to own a piece of Canadian history and contribute to the continuation of this equestrian legacy. Bidding closes on October 7 and 8, with starting bids of $5,000 for horses and $100 for breeding doses.
