Outer Banks Wild Horse Killed in DWI Vehicle Collision on Corolla Beach

A 5-year-old wild stallion named Alex, part of the endangered Spanish Mustang herd on the Outer Banks, was killed around midnight Saturday in a vehicle collision on Corolla beach. The driver, Shannon Seamster, was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Alex’s death is a significant loss to the herd, as his unique DNA cannot be replaced, and the population has already shrunk dramatically over recent decades. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund expressed deep grief, emphasizing the fragility of the horses’ environment and the importance of careful driving on the beach.

This incident follows the recent death of a 2-year-old colt named Donner, who died from a natural fight with a larger stallion. Unlike Donner’s death, Alex’s was caused by human intrusion, highlighting the dangers posed by vehicles and irresponsible behavior. The fund reminded the public that it is illegal and harmful to approach or feed the wild horses, urging visitors to maintain a safe distance and respect the animals to help protect this vulnerable herd.
