Ryan, an Australian dressage Olympian, defended his controversial whipping of a six-year-old stallion named Nico, describing it as a “life or death moment” necessary to save the horse. Nico had been deemed untrainable and dangerous after attacking a previous owner, leaving her hospitalized. Ryan explained that the horse’s aggressive behavior was severe, and despite the harshness of the whipping, it ultimately helped rehabilitate Nico, who was at risk of being sent to the knackery. He emphasized that the action was not abuse but a desperate measure to save the horse’s life.
In a Facebook statement, Ryan expressed sadness that the incident was recorded and shared by an unhappy ex-employee, clarifying that the horse was loved and has since been rehomed. He posted footage showing Nico happily riding in a paddock to demonstrate the horse’s improved condition. Ryan maintained that his actions were driven solely by concern for Nico’s welfare and that the video was an unfortunate byproduct of his rescue efforts. The whipping had been witnessed by several spectators, according to the dressage Hub account.
