Olympian Heath Ryan Suspended by Equestrian Australia After Shocking Horse Whipping Video

Olympian Heath Ryan has been provisionally suspended by Equestrian Australia after a video surfaced showing him repeatedly whipping a horse over 40 times. The footage caused widespread outrage within the equestrian community and on social media, prompting the governing body to express deep concern and launch an investigation through its integrity unit. Ryan, who competed for Australia in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, defended his actions by describing the incident as a “life or death moment” for the horse, named Nico, whom he labeled a longtime “problem child” and claimed was at risk of being sent to the knackery.

Ryan stated the video was recorded two years ago and shared by a former disgruntled employee, asserting that Nico is now thriving in a new home. He expressed regret that the footage was made public, emphasizing that his actions were motivated solely by the horse’s welfare and that he had tried to find alternative solutions. Despite his defense, Equestrian Australia has suspended his membership and all associated privileges pending the outcome of their investigation.
