Fifteen-year-old Alex Coombes from Olympia has demonstrated remarkable dedication and skill in equestrian sports, particularly with Morgan horses. Competing at the prestigious Grand National & World Championship Morgan Horse Show in Oklahoma City, Alex earned multiple awards riding three Morgans, including his own gelding BMF Mastermind (“Jack”) and his family’s FCM Zephyr. His achievements include a top ten finish in pleasure, a reserve championship in horsemanship, and a unanimous win in the hunter-type specialty-in-hand class, where he was the only junior competitor among adults.
Alex’s success extends beyond competition; he was honored with the Gladys Koehne Inspirational Youth Award by the Morgan Horse Club of Washington State for his persistence, sportsmanship, and commitment to the breed. Currently a sophomore at Olympia High School, Alex plans to continue competing, expand into Arabian breed shows, and pursue a future career as a horse trainer, reflecting his lifelong passion and dedication to equestrian sports.
