Oklahoma State University Hosts 2025 Swiftwater Rescue Conference & Competition to Train First Responders

The 2025 Oklahoma Swiftwater Rescue Conference & Competition, hosted by Oklahoma State University’s College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology, brought together first responders from across the U.S. and internationally to train in one of the nation’s premier swiftwater rescue facilities, RiverSport OKC. This annual event, held since 2022, offers critical hands-on training and classroom instruction in dynamic water rescue scenarios, including new modules like attic rescues inspired by Hurricane Katrina. Led by experienced emergency responders, the conference emphasizes realistic, practical skills and decision-making needed to safely conduct rescues in hazardous flood conditions.

Beyond technical training, the conference fosters collaboration among firefighters, EMS, urban search and rescue teams, and law enforcement, strengthening networks and sharing best practices. The event also honors heroic rescuers through the Higgins and Langley Awards, recognizing exceptional preparedness and teamwork under extreme conditions. By providing this specialized training, OSU supports first responders in enhancing community safety, disaster resilience, and resource conservation amid the deadly threat of flash flooding.
