OBS to Implement Stricter Safety and Veterinary Protocols for 2026 Under-Tack Shows

Starting in 2026, the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company (OBS) is implementing stricter safety protocols for its under-tack shows to enhance horse and rider welfare. Key measures include restricting the use of riding crops so riders cannot strike horses with hands off the reins before, during, or after breezing, and requiring all horses to have a veterinary certificate confirming their fitness to perform. These exams must be completed within 72 hours prior to the show, with results submitted two days before the event. OBS also continues to enforce medication restrictions, banning NSAIDs and corticosteroids within 48 hours and any substances within 24 hours before performances, with violations resulting in returns.

These changes build on previous efforts such as the introduction of a gallop-only option to boost buyer confidence and ongoing veterinary monitoring during shows. OBS director of sales Tod Wojciechowski emphasized that these measures aim to improve animal welfare and market integrity, noting that under-tack times are just one of many factors buyers consider. The 2026 March Sale will take place March 10-12, with under-tack shows from March 4-7, reflecting OBS’s commitment to safer and more transparent sales practices.
