Oaklawn announced a new purse incentive starting March 19, 2025, aimed at rewarding horsemen who support the track through the remainder of the 2025-2026 racing season. The program offers additional purse money for races that attract larger fields, with allowance and maiden special weight races receiving $5,000 extra for each starter above nine, and other overnight races receiving $2,000 extra per starter above nine. This could increase allowance race purses up to $140,000 and overnight purses up to $36,000, excluding stakes races.
The initiative is designed to encourage larger fields, which are seen as crucial for competitive racing and wagering value, benefiting both horsemen and bettors. Oaklawn president Louis A. Cella emphasized the goal of strengthening the racing product for participants and fans by rewarding participation and enhancing the wagering experience on-track and via simulcast platforms.
