Nysos, a talented but previously injury-plagued son of Nyquist, finally broke through with his first Grade 1 victory at the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile on November 1, delivering a thrilling stretch run to defeat stablemate Citizen Bull. Trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert and owned by Charlie and Susan Chu’s Baoma Corp, Nysos overcame setbacks including a bruised hind foot that kept him out of the Pacific Classic, with the owners’ patience and careful management playing a key role in his success. The win marked Baffert’s 21st Breeders’ Cup victory, tying him with Aidan O’Brien for the most all-time.
The victory was especially rewarding given Nysos’s interrupted career and the high expectations placed on him as a top 3-year-old prospect. Baffert praised both Nysos and Citizen Bull, who set fast early fractions and will retire to stud after the season. The Chus, known for their deep care and passion for their horses, were lauded for their patience and dedication, which ultimately paid off with this prestigious win. Nysos is the third Breeders’ Cup winner sired by Nyquist, who stands at Darley for $175,000 in 2024.
