The New York Racing Association (NYRA) is concluding a difficult 2026 winter meet at Aqueduct Racetrack, marked by severe weather disruptions including heavy snowstorms, cancellations, and declining field sizes averaging just 6.5 starters per race. The harsh conditions delayed the start of grass racing and led to a challenging season for participants and fans alike. However, NYRA is preparing for a significant transformation next winter by moving winter racing to Belmont Park, which will feature a modern all-weather Tapeta surface designed to improve racing conditions and attract more horses.
To bolster winter racing and breeding programs, NYRA has partnered with Woodbine to launch the Empire Trillium Series, a $3.2 million stakes program for New York- and Canadian-bred horses spanning late December through July. This collaboration aims to increase field sizes and provide year-round racing opportunities on all-weather tracks, encouraging Canadian trainers to winter in New York. The series is expected to enhance the appeal of New York and Canadian breeding programs, with industry leaders expressing optimism that the initiative will revitalize winter racing and create new opportunities for owners, trainers, and breeders.
