NYC Voters Divided as Polls Show Conflicting Support for Ending Horse-Drawn Carriages

A recent Zogby Analytics poll commissioned by animal rights group NYCLASS reveals that 78% of New York City voters support Ryder’s Law, a bill to phase out the horse-drawn carriage industry by 2026. The poll, surveying 803 likely voters, showed strong bipartisan backing, with supporters of various political figures overwhelmingly in favor. NYCLASS and Mayor Eric Adams, who also endorses the ban, argue that the industry endangers horses, drivers, and the public, citing recent horse deaths and safety incidents. The Central Park Conservancy has also called for an end to the carriages, emphasizing concerns about animal welfare and public safety.

In contrast, a separate poll by the Transport Workers Union Local 100, representing carriage drivers, found that 59% of Central Park visitors support keeping the horse-drawn carriages, viewing them as a cherished tradition. The union disputes claims of mistreatment, highlighting veterinary and health department attestations of humane care. The debate remains contentious, with the city council currently reviewing Ryder’s Law amid strong public and political pressure on both sides.
