The NSW Parliament concluded its final sitting week of 2025 with significant environmental and legislative outcomes. A bill from the Shooters Party aimed at weakening gun laws failed to pass after the Upper House rejected changes to debate rules, despite support from the Labor Government. Conversely, the Kosciuszko Wild Horse Heritage Repeal Bill, which removes legal protections for invasive feral horses in Kosciuszko National Park, was passed by both houses, reversing previous legislation that favored protecting these invasive species.
Greens MP Sue Higginson hailed these developments as major victories for the community and the environment, criticizing past misuse of power that protected invasive species in the alpine park. She emphasized that while the gun lobby’s efforts were stalled, the repeal of protections for feral horses reflected broad community support and bipartisan cooperation, marking a positive step for environmental management in NSW.
