Nottinghamshire Farm Owner Jailed After Police and Charities Rescue Over 450 Neglected Animals

In November 2023, over 450 animals from 19 species were rescued from Croftfield Farm in Nottinghamshire following a police and charity-led operation involving more than 100 staff from eight organizations, including the RSPCA and The Donkey Sanctuary. The farm owner was sentenced to 12 months in prison and banned for life from keeping animals after pleading guilty to 25 offences. Many animals were found in appalling conditions, suffering from untreated infections, severe malnutrition, and poor hoof health, with one donkey so ill it had to be euthanized on site.

The rescue was one of the largest recent animal welfare seizures, with charities working together to systematically treat and rehome the animals. Of the 29 donkeys saved, 12 will remain in permanent care due to chronic health issues, while others are being rehabilitated for rehoming. The Donkey Sanctuary and RSPCA are now appealing for new homes for some donkeys, emphasizing the importance of early support for struggling owners to prevent such suffering.
