North Elba Receives $6 Million State Grant to Replace Long Building and Modernize Show Grounds

Governor Kathy Hochul announced a $6 million state grant to the town of North Elba for replacing the Long Building at the North Elba Show Grounds, part of a broader initiative to modernize the grounds and expand their year-round use. The funding, managed by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York, supports community and economic development efforts that highlight the significant economic impact of the Lake Placid Horse Shows, which generate nearly $18 million annually and support 164 jobs. The new building will feature a commercial kitchen and accessible bathrooms, serving multiple purposes including VIP space during horse shows, event use by the Olympic Regional Development Authority, summer camp activities, nonprofit events, and emergency sheltering.

This project is a key component of the North Elba Show Grounds and Athletic Fields Master Plan, which aims to enhance community access and facility functionality beyond the horse shows. Recent investments include $2.1 million in ring improvements funded largely by the Lake Placid Horse Show Association, stormwater infrastructure upgrades, a new 150-car parking lot, and building roof replacements. Town Supervisor Derek Doty emphasized the community integration aspect of the project, with completion of the new Long Building targeted for summer 2026 ahead of the next horse show season.
