Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot: Rising Juvenile Stars and Unpredictable Odds

The juvenile races at Royal Ascot, particularly the Norfolk Stakes (G2), have become increasingly unpredictable despite the breeding industry’s focus on speed and early maturity. Recent winners often come at long odds, reflecting the heightened competitiveness of preparatory races and the tendency for connections to limit pre-Ascot runs. Among the contenders, Afjan, trained by Heri-Francois Devin, stands out due to impressive recent performances and a strong pedigree, though he is less favored than expected. Meanwhile, Aidan O’Brien’s Charles Darwin faces the challenge of overcoming a long-standing trend against favorites in the race, despite strong backing and prior success.

American-bred horses are also making their mark, with Sandal’s Song aiming to improve on last year’s runner-up Gabaldon by winning the Norfolk Stakes after a promising debut victory in the Royal Palm Juvenile Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Trained by George Weaver and ridden by James McDonald, Sandal’s Song benefits from the race’s status as a “Win and You’re In” qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, adding further incentive for international contenders to compete at Royal Ascot.
