Nigeria Police Enforce Ban on Durbar Celebrations During Eid-el-Kabir in Kano State

The Nigeria Police have imposed a ban on all forms of Durbar displays during the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebrations in Kano State, citing security concerns. Police Public Relations Officer Abdullahi Haruna stated that despite improvements in security, threats remain, prompting the decision to enforce the ban strictly. This measure follows intelligence reports indicating that miscreants may attempt to exploit the festivities to disrupt public order, similar to incidents during Eid-el-Fitr.

In addition to the Durbar ban, the police have outlined several security measures for the celebrations, including prohibitions on horse riding, car racing, reckless driving, and the possession of firearms. Authorities are urging the public to avoid carrying suspicious objects and are advising parents to monitor their children to prevent them from being exploited by subversive elements. The police have emphasized their commitment to maintaining law and order during the festivities.

Interestingly, the ban comes shortly after the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, instructed local leaders to prepare for Durbar celebrations, indicating a potential conflict between traditional practices and security measures. This situation echoes a previous incident where the Emir faced repercussions for disregarding a similar ban, highlighting ongoing tensions between cultural traditions and security protocols in the region.
