Nicola Naylor Pays Tribute to Amadeus, the Warrior Horse Who Revived Her Dressage Career

Medal-winning para dressage rider Nicola Naylor has paid tribute to her beloved horse Amadeus, who recently passed away at age 20 after a short illness. Amadeus, a talented and spirited horse, competed on Nations Cup teams for Britain with Dan Watson and was shortlisted for the Tokyo Paralympics with Nicola. He played a pivotal role in Nicola’s return to dressage after losing her sight, helping her become the first blind rider to compete at grand prix level and win individual bronze at the European Para dressage Championships. Known for his feisty personality and zest for life, Amadeus was both a fierce competitor and a cherished family member who enjoyed an active retirement.

Amadeus’s career highlights included rapid progression from Prix St Georges to grand prix, Nations Cup victories, and memorable performances marked by his strong opinions and unpredictable nature. Despite a slight injury leading to his retirement at 16, he remained lively and king of the yard until the end. Nicola emphasized the importance of allowing horses to enjoy life in retirement, reflecting on the joy and challenges Amadeus brought to her life and sport. His passing leaves a significant void, but his legacy as a warrior and free spirit endures.
