New York State 4-H Equine Ambassadors Gain Hands-On Veterinary Experience at Cornell University

The New York State 4-H Horse Program recently hosted the Equine Ambassadors (EA) at Cornell University, offering selected high school students an immersive, hands-on experience in equine veterinary medicine, behavior, and career pathways within the agricultural and equine industries. Supported by The Agriculture and New York State Horse Breeding Development Fund, this merit-based leadership program covers all costs for participants and includes activities such as lameness examinations, behavior training, and tours of Cornell’s veterinary facilities. The program also features panels with equine professionals, enriching youth understanding of diverse career opportunities.

The initiative aims to prepare teens for future roles in veterinary science, equine management, and related fields, thereby strengthening New York’s agricultural workforce pipeline. Participants praised the program for expanding their knowledge and inspiring career goals, such as becoming equine veterinarians. The Cornell visit is part of a yearlong experience that includes attending the American Youth Horse Council Symposium, further developing leadership skills and industry insight. Cornell faculty expressed strong support for the program, emphasizing its role in fostering the next generation of equine professionals.
