New York DEC Forest Rangers Honor Fallen Ranger Amid Busy Week of Rescues and Public Safety Efforts

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Forest Rangers recently managed a variety of critical incidents, including wilderness rescues, search operations, and public safety education events across the state. Highlights from the week included treating injured hikers, conducting rope rescue training, assisting law enforcement in apprehending suspects with drone support, and searching for accident victims in remote areas. DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton commended the rangers for their dedication to protecting both state lands and visitors.

The DEC also honored the late Assistant Forest Ranger Brendan Jackson, who passed away earlier this month after a long career focused on Adirondack safety and public education. So far in 2024, Forest Rangers have responded to 362 search and rescue missions, extinguished 122 wildfires, and issued over 1,200 citations or arrests. The DEC urges hikers to prepare adequately by following safety guidelines to prevent emergencies and provides a hotline and online resources for assistance.
