New Mexico Racing Commission Approves Relocation of SunRay Park Racino License to Clovis

The New Mexico Racing Commission unanimously approved Western Gaming’s request to relocate its SunRay Park gaming license from Farmington to Clovis, aiming to boost the state horse racing industry and generate significantly higher tax revenue—potentially up to $50 million annually. The decision follows a lengthy deliberation process and is supported by local Clovis officials who anticipate increased tourism and economic benefits, particularly drawing visitors from nearby Texas cities and beyond. Western Gaming cited a steep 60% revenue decline at SunRay Park due to market saturation in Farmington as a key reason for the move.

However, the relocation faces opposition from Farmington and San Juan County officials, who warn of severe economic damage including the loss of about 120 jobs, mostly held by Native Americans, and the impact on tribal gambling revenues. Critics also argue the commission rushed the decision without sufficient transparency and suggest issuing a new racino license for Clovis through competitive bidding instead. Despite these concerns, the commission noted support from the Navajo Nation and emphasized the goal of enhancing horse racing statewide, with plans for the Clovis racino to be operational by 2028.
