East Cambridgeshire District Council has approved plans for new accommodation consisting of 24 en-suite bedrooms near Snailwell Road in Newmarket, Suffolk, aimed at young apprentices attending the British Racing School. The Newmarket Housing Trust emphasized the urgent need for secure, affordable housing for 16 to 18-year-olds entering apprenticeships, addressing challenges posed by housing shortages and rising living costs in the local horse racing industry.
The initiative has received support from key industry groups, including the Newmarket Trainers Group and The Jockey Club Estates, who highlighted the importance of safe, affordable housing to retain young apprentices and maintain Newmarket’s status as a global racing center. The council’s approval includes conditions such as beginning development within three years, reflecting a commitment to addressing workforce accommodation needs in the racing sector.
