Netflix initially invested $55 million in the sci-fi series “White Horse,” created by director Carl Rinsch, who had impressed executives with early footage and a compelling script about artificially created “Organic Intelligence” beings forming their own society. Despite high hopes and Rinsch’s creative control, the project was never completed. Netflix provided an additional $11 million in 2020 to finish the series, but prosecutors revealed that Rinsch misappropriated these funds for personal luxury purchases, including multiple Rolls-Royces, rather than completing the show.
The ensuing legal battle culminated in a federal trial where Rinsch was found guilty of defrauding Netflix. While Rinsch’s defense argued he continued working on the project and that some funds reimbursed his prior expenses, prosecutors highlighted inconsistencies, such as the timing of luxury purchases and misuse of funds intended solely for production. The trial revealed a stark contrast between the visionary early work that captivated Netflix and the eventual failure to deliver the promised series, turning “White Horse” into a cautionary tale of creative ambition overshadowed by fraud.
